Multivitamin supplementation myth

A dziś tekst po angielsku, napisany przeze mnie na potrzeby jednego serwisu, miłego czytania!

Wherever we go or whatever we  read, we are being attacked by multivitamin industry.  Millions of people take multivitamin(MVM) and other dietary supplements -they think that their health can be corrected by a boost of different vitamins or can prevent further diseases. I can bet that you or your friend reading this article takes some kind of dietary supplements. In 2014, only in United States people spent $36.7 billion on all dietary supplements.  Instead of supporting this  great industry, they could buy fresh products that contain vitamins and minerals that are better absorbed.

Of course, if you are sick - fe. you have osteoporosis or folate, vit. B 12, vit. C  deficiency anemia or you have prolonged deficiency of vitamins because of problems with absorbtion or some other preexisting medical condition- there is no doubt you should take such multivitamin supplements.Of course, proper diet is the most important factor here  (but this is too wide subject and I will mention it another time ) but sometimes it is not enough and we should take extra vitamins according to our doctor. But what happens if you are healthy ?

Imagine something. A healthy person takes each day ibuprofen -just in case- to prevent inflammation and pain. This sounds stupid, does not it? So why do you think it is OK according to MVM or other dietary supplements?

If you have proper diet- plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains you should never think about extra vitamin supplementation- often it contains 100 percent or more of your recommended daily value of different vitamins. What happens when you get too much vitamins?

You are under risk of hypervitaminosis- abnormally high storage levels of vitamins which can lead to toxic symptoms. Also, there were studies performed which showed that too much vitamin supplementation leads to increased mortality rate (Bjelakovic G, Nikolova D, Simonetti RG, et al. Antioxidant supplements for prevention of gastrointestinal cancers: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Lancet. 2004 Oct 2-8;364(9441):1219-28. ,
Bjelakovic G, Nikolova D, Gluud LL, et al.Mortality in randomized trials of antioxidant supplements for primary and secondary prevention: systematic review and meta-analysis. JAMA. 2007 Feb 28;297(8):842-57.) and increased risk of developing skin cancer(Hercberg S, Ezzedine K, Guinot C, et al.Antioxidant supplementation increases the risk of skin cancers in women but not in men. The Journal of Nutrition. 2007 Sep;137(9):2098-105.)

What is more, scientific studies showed that multivitamin supplements do not prevent cancer or cardiovascular disease or have no benefit in treatment and prevention of chronic diseases and verbal memory(Vitamin and Mineral Supplements in the primary prevention of CD and Cancer, The Physicians Health Study II)

REMEMBER!

1. Take multivitamins supplements only after consultation with your doctor, if you have some prolonged vit. deficiency or other preexisting medical condition

2. Instead of MVM - buy fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains products- you will reach your suggested daily vitamin intake.

3. Vitamin supplements can make more harm than good!

4. MVM supplements do not prevent CVD, cancer or other chronic diseases!
